I’m a big believer in tracking your period. Not only is it helpful to know when your monthly bleed with start (nobody likes that kind of surprise), it’s super important to figure out what’s normal for you in terms of your cycle so you can more easily determine if you’re having period problems.

Believe it or not, periods should be easy breeze; no cramps, bloating, PMS, crazy mood swings, unrelenting cravings, etc.  Period problems are a sign of hormone problems and it’s important to get to the root cause as soon as possible because one hormone out of balance can throw your whole body out of whack and have a major impact on your health now and down the road.

Changes in your cycle can sometimes signal a health problem.  Always ask yourself if anything new happen around the time of the change in your periods?

Here’s some information that a good period app can help you track:

  • Is your period longer or shorter than usual?
  • Note the heaviness of your flow. Does it seem lighter or heavier than usual? How often do you need to change your sanitary protection? Have you passed any blood clots?
  • Spotting. Are you bleeding in between periods?
  • Pain. Do you have pain with your period. Does the pain feel worse than usual?
  • Mood. Have you experienced any changes in mood or behavior.

Every month you should track your period to make sure it is coming on time and to monitor all the signs of period health. Keep track of how you feel physically and emotionally, especially the week before and the week of your period.

My favorite app is Clue. According to their website, Clue “uses an algorithm to calculate and predict your own unique cycle, and the more you use it, the more accurate it is. I’ve also heard good things about iPeriod and My Cycles Plus.  Of course, a paper chart or calendar works fine, too.

Until next time, make every bite count!
